NABCEP Requests Input on PV Installation Professional Credentials

Filed under: News — Kathryn Casey @ 10:08 am

A Survey has been released for input on the update of the PV Installation Professional Certification Program and development of three new Specialty Credentials

Clifton Park, NY (September 13, 2016) –

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is releasing a survey to collect stakeholder input on updates to its existing PV Installation Professional Certification and development of new PV Specialty Credentials in Design, Installation, and Commissioning and Maintenance.

In May of 2016, NABCEP was awarded a $1.1 million cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative. As one of the DOE Solar Training and Education for Professionals (STEP) awardees, NABCEP has been updating and expanding upon its personnel certification programs to address the changing needs of solar professionals, their employers, and stakeholders.

Earlier this year, a committee of subject matter experts assembled to update the Job Task Analysis for the NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certification. While NABCEP updates examination questions on an ongoing basis, the foundational Job Task Analysis is revised through a comprehensive stakeholder input and industry validation process approximately every five years to ensure that the scope of the certification program remains relevant and in-line with current best practices. Now that the Job Task Analysis has been updated for PV Installation Professional, validation studies are being conducted which involve the survey of industry stakeholders, including practicing PV Installation Professionals. For the best results, survey participants should represent a range of experience and education levels, organizational settings, and geographical regions.

This committee also laid the groundwork for three new certifications for individuals who specialize in PV system design, installation, or commissioning and maintenance. The goal of these new programs is to define personnel standards for these growing sectors of the industry and fill a major gap in solar workforce standards. The certifications will be aligned with typical career paths that people take between entry level training and the many years of experience that are usually necessary to become a Certified PV Installation Professional. NABCEP hopes to launch these credentials in 2017.

This survey is a critical step in identifying and evaluating the knowledge necessary for competent performance as a PV Installation Professional or a specialist in the design, installation, or commissioning and maintenance of PV systems. Your feedback is critical for the development of a valid and fair examination for the PVIP and specialty program.

Please click the link below to participate in this survey. All responses must be collected by October 14, 2016.

NABCEP Requests Input on PV Associate Credential

A Survey has been released for input on the update of the PV Associate Job Task Analysis

Clifton Park, NY (September 13, 2016) –

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is releasing a survey to collect stakeholder input on its existing PV Associate Program.

The PV Associate (PVA) Program has recently been rebranded from the PV Entry Level Program. The PVA program is designed for any individuals seeking entry into the solar field and wanting to demonstrate they have achieved basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of the application, design, installation, and operation of PV systems.

The Job Task Analysis is revised through a comprehensive stakeholder input and industry validation process approximately every five years to ensure that the scope of the certification program remains relevant and in-line with current best practices. Earlier this year, a committee of subject matter experts assembled to update the Job Task Analysis for the NABCEP PV Associate Credential. Now that the Job Task Analysis has been updated for PV Associate, validation studies are being conducted which involve the survey of industry stakeholders, including practicing PV installation professionals. For the best results, survey participants should represent a range of experience and education levels, organizational settings, and geographical regions.

This survey is a critical step in identifying and evaluating the knowledge necessary for competent performance as a PV Associate. Your input will help us develop a valid and fair examination and continue our efforts to serve the PV industry.

The survey results are meant to identify how professionals in the field rate the domains, tasks, knowledge and skills contained in the JTA according to their importance, criticality, and frequency of performance. Your participation in this survey will help NABCEP to ensure that the examination accurately measures the knowledge critical for performing PV System Installations.

NABCEP Announces Associate Program Launch

Filed under: News — Kathryn Casey @ 12:58 pm

August 22, 2016 (Clifton Park, NY)-

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is pleased to announce the official launch of it’s NABCEP Associate Program. The Associate Program is a rebranding of the popular Entry Level Program. These changes will facilitate greater access to the credentials and increased use by employers as a way to identify those who have demonstrated a basic knowledge of fundamental principles and concepts in the application, design, installation, and operation of photovoltaic, solar heating, or small wind systems.

With the launch of the Associate Program, candidates will notice the addition of an experience-based pathway, where an individual who has at least 6 months of experience working in the PV, solar heating, or small wind industry will be eligible to sit for the relevant exam. Those without experience can still qualify to sit for an Associate Exam by completing training through one of the over 250 registered NABCEP Exam Providers. NABCEP Associates will be provided with a logo and wordmark that they can use to recognize their accomplishment, and NABCEP will maintain an online directory where employers or other interested parties can verify the credentials. NABCEP Associates will need to document at least 12 hours of Continuing Education every three years to maintain the credential. Individuals who have previously passed a NABCEP Entry Level Exam will be able to obtain this new designation through a simple registration process.

For more information about this new program, please visit our website.

NABCEP Awarded DOE Sunshot Funding to Expand Solar Workforce Credentialing Programs

Filed under: News — Kathryn Casey @ 2:18 pm
Federal cooperative agreement will enable updates the current NABCEP PV Installation Professional® Certification and development of three new solar personnel certifications.

CLIFTON PARK, NY (May 17, 2016) –  The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), the leading provider of professional certification and company accreditation programs for the renewable energy industry, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $1.1 million cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative. As one of the DOE Solar Training and Education for Professionals (STEP) awardees, NABCEP will update and expand upon its personnel certification programs to address the changing needs of solar professionals, their employers, and stakeholders.

A major portion of the project will be dedicated to updating the existing NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certification, which has been recognized as the gold standard for solar professionals since 2003.  While NABCEP updates examination questions on an ongoing basis, the foundational Job Task Analysis is revised through a comprehensive stakeholder input and industry validation process approximately every five years to ensure that the scope of the certification program remains relevant and in-line with current best practices.

“The competency and professionalism of solar workers is the foundation of a trusted, productive clean energy economy,” said Richard Lawrence, Executive Director for NABCEP. “As the industry evolves, it is important that NABCEP’s certification programs evolve as well.  The Job Task Analysis is how we capture the skill sets and competencies required of solar workers who ensure the quality and performance of residential and commercial photovoltaic systems.”

In 2017, NABCEP will launch three new certifications for individuals who have specialized in PV system design, installation, or maintenance.  The new certification programs will help to define personnel standards for these growing sectors of the industry and fill a major gap in solar workforce standards.  The certifications will be aligned with typical career paths that people take between entry level training and the many years of experience that are usually necessary to become a Certified PV Installation Professional.
