  • September 2009 NABCEP Exams Break All Records; 129% Increase in Test-takers from the Spring 2009 Exams

    The September 2009 NABCEP Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Installer Certification exams saw a record number of applicants: 455 people in 19 sites across the U.S. sat for the exams. The Spring 2009 exams, offered at 14 sites, was administered to 199 test-takers. That’s a 129% increase from the Spring to the Fall exams.

    Rebecca Eaton, NABCEP’’s Executive Director, has been on the job for about five months now getting familiar with the organization and racking up a fat’to do’ list. Still, whenever I talk with her, she’s relaxed; her voice is soothingly friendly. How does she do it? We talked with her briefly when she first joined NABCEP, but I wanted to check in and see how things were moving along. In between back-to-back meetings, speaking engagements and conference calls, Rebecca added this conversation to that hefty ‘to do. What a trooper.

  • A Conversation with NABCEP’s Treasurer and Board Member, Les Nelson

    Les Nelson is one of NABCEP’’s tireless promoters. As NABCEP’s treasurer and board member, he served as NABCEP’s first chair. Besides NABCEP, Les has been a Director of the Solar Energy Industries Association since 1994, and Chair of its Solar Thermal Division since 1998. Les is currently the Executive Director of the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation, which rates and certifies solar thermal equipment. He has served as a Director of the California Solar Energy Industries Association since 1986, and served 5 terms as its President. Les’s involvement with the solar thermal industry dates to 1972. He has been involved in the formulation of legislation and policy advocacy on numerous solar energy related issues at both state and federal levels. I’m not sure he ever sleeps, but he was gracious to talk with me about his work. Here’s our conversation.

    Craig Stager is the Design & Compliance Manager for SPG Solar, responsible for all projects designed, with a focus on enforcing the standards of system compliance and performance. For the past six years, Craig has overseen the engineering, design, and permitting of more than 1,200 projects, ranging from smaller residential to large scale projects such as megawatt single axis solar PV trackers. Craig became NABCEP-certified in April, 2005, and is on NABCEP’’s Ethics Committee, and is also a Certified General Electrician (California). In between travel and meetings, Craig was kind enough to talk to me about his work and his involvement with NABCEP. Here’s our conversation.

    A lot has happened since I wrote my last column. The biggest and most exciting news from my perspective has been NABCEP’s hiring of Think Energy to serve as our management services team. After an exhaustive search for an Executive Director we learned that our organization needed more than a single person could offer. At this point we began considering hiring a company who could bring a team approach to the job.
