NABCEP Announces Release of Practice Exams

Filed under: News — Kathryn Casey @ 10:37 am
Online Practice Exams are Now Available for the PV Installation Professional Certification and PV Entry Level Exams

Clifton Park, NY (April 6, 2015) – The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is pleased to announced the release of practice exams for the PV Installation Professional Certification and PV Entry Level Exams.

By offering practice exams, those preparing for the exam have the opportunity to become comfortable with the format of certification and entry level exams. It also allows test-takers to become more comfortable with the timing of the exam and knowing how long to spend on a given question. The practice exams were written using the same specifications as the full exam.

The practice exams are available for online purchase on NABCEP’s website. From the time of initial access, test-takers will have a 48-hour window to complete the exam. They consist of 35 sample questions similar in type to those found on the actual examination. Those who purchase the practice exams will have twice the amount of time as they would during the official examination. Once the exam is submitted, a full score report will be immediately available. This report will inform the test-taker of how many questions they answered correctly in each area of the practice exam.

The online format of the practice exam will be especially beneficial for the PV Entry Level candidates, as they will be able to experience an online-computerized testing environment. For many of the PV Entry Level Providers, this is how that exam is administered.

NABCEP is excited to be able to make this option available for the PV Installation Professional and PV Entry Level exam. Click Here for more information.

Confirmed Partnership Delivers Premium Insurance Credit from ProSight Specialty Insurance to Qualified NABCEP Certified Professionals and Accredited Companies

Albany, NY (March 31, 2015) – The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is proud to announce its partnership with ProSight Specialty Insurance (ProSight). Through this partnership, NABCEP is able to add to their Benefits of Certification program, and launch an exclusive insurance offering for NABCEP Certified Professionals. The organizations have collaborated to promote NABCEP certification by offering insurance premium credits to qualified solar installation companies that have achieved NABCEP Company Accreditation or have Certified Professionals on staff.

“Our partnership with ProSight Specialty Insurance demonstrates how installation companies, and the solar industry as a whole, benefits from a trained and certified workforce,” said Richard Lawrence, Executive Director at NABCEP. “ProSight understands the risks associated with our industry and offers products that help meet the needs of solar installation professionals.”

As the solar industry’s most recognized and esteemed certification, there are many benefits that come with being a NABCEP Certified Professional. Certificants and Accredited Companies gain increased credibility and marketing value, giving them a competitive advantage over other solar professionals that do not hold the same certification or accreditation. This in turn provides greater career mobility and peer recognition.

NABCEP’s Benefits of Certification program demonstrates solar industry support through exclusive offers on products, services, and events. This new partnership with ProSight Specialty Insurance adds to the growing list of benefits available to NABCEP Certified Professionals and Accredited Companies.

“NABCEP certified contractors bring a ‘gold standard’ level of safety and skill to every project and we value NABCEP’s leadership and commitment to furthering educational excellence in the renewable energy industry,” said Mary Hughes, President of Energy at ProSight Specialty Insurance. “The premium credit was designed for qualified NABCEP certified practitioners because we know they have achieved a skill level in the field given the training and expertise associated with a NABCEP certification.”

NABCEP Proposes Changes to Entry Level Exam Program

Filed under: News — Richard Lawrence @ 7:17 pm

December 22, 2014 (Clifton Park, NY)

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is seeking stakeholder input on proposed changes to the NABCEP Entry Level Program, including the PV, Solar Heating, and Small Wind Entry Level Exams. Since 2005, more than 25,000 individuals have taken one of NABCEP’s Entry Level Examinations after completing training from one of over 300 Registered NABCEP Entry Level Exam Providers. The proposed changes will:

  1. change the name of the program to the “NABCEP Certified Associate Program,” and recognize those individuals who complete the eligibility requirements and pass the examination as being a “NABCEP Certified Associate” (I.E. “NABCEP Certified Solar Heating Associate”);
  2. expand the eligibility requirements to sit for the exam by adding an experience-based pathway whereby individuals can qualify for the certification after 6 months of related employment;
  3. implement recertification requirements such that individuals must obtain 12 hours of continuing education every three years to maintain the Associate Certification;
  4. and, initiate a process through which any individual who previously passed a NABCEP Entry Level Exam may obtain the appropriate NABCEP Certified Associate designation.
    Feedback on the proposed changes is being collected through an on-line survey, open to the public until January 22, 2015. The survey can be accessed via the following URL:

“The changes proposed to the Entry Level Program are long overdue. For good reason, tiered certification programs with both associate and professional levels are common across all kinds of different industries. Once adopted, NABCEP will finally have a mechanism in place for those who have passed the challenging entry-level examinations to be able to publicize their achievement with an industry recognized credential,” says NABCEP’s Executive Director, Richard Lawrence.

Don Warfield, NABCEP’s Chairperson says, “The NABCEP Board of Directors has put careful thought into the proposed changes to the Entry Level Exam Program and is now seeking input from the public to help guide our decision on these important changes. At the heart of the changes is the ability for those who have obtained employment in a job that did not require prior training, to be able to distinguish themselves with an associate-level credential while working on gaining the experience and education required for professional-level certification. We believe these changes will have a tremendously positive impact on the careers of thousands of people working in the renewable energy industry, and we look forward to receiving feedback from the industry on the proposal.”

Comments on the proposed changes may also be submitted by email to; faxed to (518) 899-1092; or mailed to 56 Clifton Country Road, Suite 202, Clifton Park, NY 12065. All comments and survey responses must be received by January 22, 2015.

NABCEP Volunteer Opportunities

Filed under: News — Kathryn Casey @ 9:10 am

New NABCEP Credentials in Need of Committee Members

NABCEP has been funded by NYSERDA to develop a  credential for photovoltaic system inspectors and solar heating system inspectors. We  are in search of subject matter experts to serve on a technical committee for each credential. We are particularly looking for municipal/AHJ system inspectors with knowledge of solar, and others from the solar industry who have experience related to system commissioning and inspection.
We must ensure that all stakeholders are represented in this committee. We need approximately 12-15 volunteers for each committee who represent different geographic regions and practice settings. The committees will first be tasked with developing a Job Task Analysis to define the tasks, knowledge and skills associated with inspecting customer-sited PV and Solar Heating systems. The initial time commitment is attending a two-day meeting to develop the JTA and participate in follow-up e-mail and conference calls to revise and finalize the document.

If you are interested in joining one of the Inspector Credential Technical Committees, please send a resume and letter of interest to Kathryn Casey at:
