Filed under: News — Sue McKeen @ 11:33 am

Walt Ratterman Award for Creative Community Energy

Inspiration for the Award:

The annual Walt Ratterman Award for Creative Community Energy was created to recognize and honor Walt Ratterman, one of NABCEP’s first Certificants, who was killed while working in Haiti when the devastating earthquake struck. Walt’s astonishing renewable energy work among some of the worlds most needy was truly inspirational. Walt channeled his efforts into the non-profit company he co-founded, Sun Energy Power International The company’s mission was “to promote an increased quality of life in remote, rural regions of the world through the use of renewable energy”.

Intent:

By creating this award, we hope that Walt’s legacy will continue to inspire other renewable energy installers to follow his formidable lead.

What is taken into consideration?

The Walt Ratterman Award will be presented to the NABCEP Certificant who does the most creative public service oriented renewable energy project of the year. Installations can be domestic or off shore but they must be performed at no charge for a not-for-profit or charitable organization. Considerations such as legacy, local labor and material content, on-the-job-training and project sustainability will help guide the award committee.

Who can qualify for the award?

Nominees for the award must be NABCEP Certificants in good standing and may work in any technology that NABCEP offers certifications for.

How to nominate someone:

Nominations should include details of the individual nominated, their projects, and the nominator’s reasons for the nomination. All nominations should be forwarded to Shawn O’Brien, NABCEP’s Executive Director at sobrien@nabcep.org.  Nominations for the award will be accepted until December 31, 2017.

When and where the recipient of the award is announced:

The recipient of the award will be announced each year at NABCEP’s Continuing Education Conference. The next recipient of this award will be announced in March, 2018.

About Walt Ratterman

NABCEP and U.S. Department of Energy Develop Three New Specialty Certifications

NABCEP Press Release 10/19/2017

NABCEP and U.S. Department of Energy Develop Three New Specialty Certifications in Photovoltaic Design, Installer, and Commissioning & Maintenance

New Certifications Reflect Specialization in the PV Industry and will be offered via Computer-Based Testing at over 600 Test Sites within U.S. & Canada

Clifton Park, NY October 19, 2017— The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), the most widely respected certification organization in the renewable energy industry, announced three new specialty certifications for the  solar industry. Developed in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SunShot Initiative, the new certifications are: PV Design Specialist, PV Installer Specialist, and PV Commissioning & Maintenance Specialist. Beginning January 3rd, 2018, the new specialty certification exams, along with NABCEP’s PV Installation Professional (PVIP) Certification exam, will be offered via computer-based testing (CBT) at over 600 test sites in the U.S. and Canada.

Achieving specialty certification demonstrates that PV professionals possess the advanced training, knowledge, and competencies required for their job while conveying that they have earned an externally validated and rigorously developed certification.

“We developed our PV Installation Professional Certification in 2002 as a way to certify PV installers who do it all; they can design, install, operate, commission, and maintain PV systems,” says Shawn O’Brien, Executive Director of NABCEP. “As the PV industry has matured, we noticed that job specialization within the PV industry was becoming the new norm. We developed these certifications with the Department of Energy to reflect the changes in the industry and provide a way for professionals to earn a certification that attests to their level of knowledge and proficiency in their specialty.”

NABCEP’s three new specialty certification exams will only be available via computer-based testing at any of Castle Worldwide, Inc.’s testing centers across the United States and Canada, while the PVIP exam will be available in both CBT and paper-and-pencil format.

“We made the decision to offer these four exams via CBT, and more in the near future, to provide test-takers with more convenience, decrease their cost of travel, and reduce our paper consumption,” said Don Warfield, Chair of NABCEP’s Board of Directors. “We believe that offering more specialty certifications and increasing the availability of our certification exams will have a major impact on consumer protection within the renewable energy industry. Since many PV consumers have difficulty evaluating and verifying what they need, NABCEP’s certification programs are an invaluable tool for consumers to choose skilled and knowledgeable professionals while improving the overall welfare of the PV market.”

NABCEP’s new certifications were developed with the financial assistance of the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative. With the SunShot Initiative’s support, NABCEP will implement its new certification suite and offer testing services nationally.

NABCEP Press Release 10/17/17

NABCEP PV Associate Exam to Be Administered Outside of North America for the First Time

NABCEP’s PV Associate Exam will be available at over 370 test sites in 97 countries

CLIFTON PARK, NY (October 17, 2017) –  The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) announces that NABCEP’s Photovoltaic (PV) Associate exam will be administered outside of North America for the first time. The international exam will be the same as the one offered in the United States and Canada, using a computerized format. The exam will be administered in English only. As in North America, the purpose of taking the NABCEP PV Associate exam is to demonstrate an individual’s knowledge of PV systems and earn a credential from the most well-respected renewable energy certification company in the U.S. and Canada.

The major function of the NABCEP PV Associate Program is identifying individuals who have obtained the knowledge of the basic principles relating to the application, installation, operation, and economics of PV systems.  The NABCEP PV Associate Program is intended for anyone who is currently working in, or seeking employment in the PV industry. This includes those who are students in renewable energy programs, workers at an early stage in their PV career, experienced professionals who have just begun offering PV products and services, or those in PV jobs in countries for which there is no professional certification or credential.

“Candidates for NABCEP’s PV Associate exam live all over the globe, but until now they had to travel to either the U.S. or Canada to take the exam,” said Shawn O’Brien, NABCEP’s Executive Director. “International administrations of NABCEP’s PV Associate exam will be offered at any of the international test sites of our testing vendor, Castle Worldwide, Inc.”

NABCEP’s partnership with Castle Worldwide will enable solar professionals to take the PV Associate exam in over 370 cities in 97 countries across the globe, including China, India, Australia, Germany, Kenya, and many others. For a full list of test sites, please click here. International test-takers will be required to pay an additional $75 exam fee, which is standard for all of Castle Worldwide’s international exams.

“NABCEP, its Board Members, and staff are very pleased to offer this exam outside of North America, and to play a bigger role in establishing an international baseline of knowledge regarding the fundamental principles of photovoltaic systems,” said Don Warfield, Chair of NABCEP’s Board of Directors. “We are proud of our rigorous examinations, developed with the help of many subject matter experts in the field of renewable energy, and NABCEP’s well-earned reputation for quality certifications and credentials. We’re excited to work closely with Castle Worldwide and our Registered Associate Providers to offer a comprehensive examination, that is based on an industry-developed and validated Job Task Analysis, in countries that don’t currently have a way for PV professionals to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and experience.”

Current Registered NABCEP Associate Training Providers will be able to offer their trainings internationally and allow individuals who complete PV Associate courses to take the exam via computer-based testing at one of Castle Worldwide, Inc.’s locations. For organizations interested in becoming a Registered NABCEP Associate Provider, please review the NABCEP Associate Provider Info Packet, which provides information about the program, requirements for participation, policies, and procedures, before filling out a Registered Provider Application.

PV Squared Achieves Prestigious NABCEP Company Accreditation

Greenfield Solar Installation Company Is One Of Eight Solar Companies In The Country To Achieve Company Accreditation By North American Board Of Certified Energy Practitioners

Greenfield, MA — PV Squared, an employee-owned and Certified B Corp solar installation company headquartered in Greenfield, Massachusetts, has just received Company Accreditation by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABECP). The accreditation is awarded to companies that meet a rigorous set of standards around installation, employee training and qualification, safe work practices, and customer accountability. PV Squared joins seven other Accredited Companies, and is the first company located in New England.

Company Accreditation is the highest recognition of quality assurance for solar installation companies in the US. “This accreditation is proof that we are actually performing to the standards by which we hold ourselves accountable,” said the company’s General Manager Stacy Metzger. “Since we launched our business in 2002, we’ve focused on delivering a custom designed, high-quality, long-term renewable energy solution to homes and businesses in Western Massachusetts and the surrounding regions. This is evidence that we are delivering on those promises.”

NABCEP was founded in 2002 a mission “to support, and work with, the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries, professionals, and stakeholders to develop and implement quality credentialing and certification programs for practitioners.”

Achieving NABCEP Company Accreditation program has been a shared goal for several years and is the result of collaboration across every team within the company. The accreditation process was itself an opportunity to learn, refine, and grow best practices among a broader community of highly qualified solar installation professionals. “As a local company and a worker-owned cooperative, it’s absolutely essential that we are able to objectively assess the impact we are having in the communities where we work. The NABCEP Company Accreditation provides us with tools to measure that impact. At the end of the day, we’re confident in the work we’ve done,” added Metzger.

PV Squared is a local leader in the field of solar design, installation, and maintenance. PV Squared has provided renewable energy solutions to a range of clients, including business owners, commercial property owners, farmers, academic institutions, and homeowners since 2002.
